We're having some fun seeing how far we can take BIM and in this case related to a rendered panorama. The file is too big to attach here so I posted a lo-Res version of it to the internet as a link. It is a flash file so Adobe Flash 10 needs to be installed on your machine but it should open up just fine. Once it opens you should be able to orbit / pan around the room.

Model with ACA2010+VisionREZ then rendered with 3ds Max Design 2010. To create the panorama we used a free program called GoCubic to output to QuickTime. Finally used another program called Pano2VR to compile the QuickTime video to Flash.

Anyway, pretty cool way to further leverage architectural BIM data for the sales and marketing side of the equation.

Enjoy!

That does look cool, it could be good for showing off to a client, for a company website or for a sales centre on a new development or something.

I do kind of get the feeling the term 'BIM' is somewhat over used depending on what definition you adhere to though.

H'Angus,

"I do kind of get the feeling the term 'BIM' is somewhat over used depending on what definition you adhere to though."

I concur. In my opinion I don't think the term BIM is necessarily over used as much as it is abused.

From our perspective BIM is not a product it is a process. Prior to BIM it is possible you could have created renderings, animations and panoramas, from CAD solutions, that would be close to this quality but the efficiency would have been very lacking.

However, because we can now leverage BIM data starting from the architectural design phase it makes promotional items (such as this particular panorama) economically viable from a production and sales stand point. Without BIM this would not be possible, economically wise.

Thanks

Holy Guacamole! Are you guys hiring? I wanna do that for a living.

Nice job. I hesitate to show my boss, then he will want one for every building.

Tell Robert not to tile the entire entry and family room (?). I HATE all tile floors.

very nice!

it is BIM if we can schedule the doors, get a sqft calc on the finishes and cut a section through the building and communicate how it will be built

Thanks! :) Not now but we are seeing some production return so I expect to see some new hiring toward the end of Q1/2010 and into Q2/2010.

Schedules and Bill of Materials? Oh yeah, totally agree that is the sweet spot / ROI part of BIM that we love so much as well. The renderings and models are nice and all but the real "meat" comes from getting the "I" (information) from the "B" and the "M".

To that effect we created a link using the API for DWF so that we can export a model and associated BOM as a DWF file. Open it with Design Review and you can click on a item in the model and it will highlight its location in the BOM spreadsheet and vice versa. It is great for estimators because they now have a "visual" validation that all information in the structure is being properly taken off. This way they no longer have to print off a set of plans and manually count everything with highlighters, etc. Simply validate that all necessary information is there and start applying costs codes and adjusting waste factors.

Thanks
Jay
