Converting an in place mass to a family

Is there any way of converting an in place mass into a family file? I have tried copying the mass from my project file however it wont allow me to paste it into a family file...any help please.

If you open your in-place family in the project, you should be able to select/copy the massing elements, and then paste them into a mass family.

You can if you open/edit the in-place family and copy/paste the mass(es).

You cannot, if you select the in-place family from the project and then try to copy/past it into a family template.

Andrew is correct. There are a lot of things you can not do to an in-place family that you can do once you edit the family.
