32 bit & 64 bit

Hi, can anyone tell me if you can use one computer with 32 bit and another with 64 bit on the same project. For example if you have a central file or any file that was created in 64 bit would a person with a 32 bit computer be able to use that file?

It will be fine. We have several 32 bit stations with 32 bit Revit in the same project as 64 bit stations with 64 bit Revit.

The only time it will matter is if your project is so large the 32 bit stations simply cant manage it, but thats not a hardware compatibility issue, per se.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer:

You would be wise to not mix and match 32 and 64 bit in a project, especially if the project
file size approaches 200MB or more. There is a memory limitation on 32 bit machines, where they will not be able to Save or Open a large file which was saved on a 64 bit machine.

I would highly encourage all Revit users upgrade to 64 bit OS, 64 bit Revit, and a minimum
of 8 GB of ram. This is based on our real-world experience over the last 2 years or so.

This is more critical on large projects, with 150-200 MB files, several linked models,
lots of complex geometry, etc.

Thanks for your quick responses. The majority of our files are less than 80mb so it sounds like the only limitations will be the ram in the computers.

Our projects rarely go over 50MB, and we have not had any problems with users opening files on both x86 and x64 systems.

Very large file sizes can be a problem, as mentioned, but if your files remain small it won't be an issue.

And people having that issue are not restrictied to 32 bit low memory systems, either.

Is MEMORY an issue with some (read: extremely large and taxing) revit projects? Yes.

As the OP asked... Is working with 32 bit systems and 64 bit systems in the same project? Not at all. Our template has been created on a 32 bit system, edited in both, used on both. We have 5 or 6 projects underway, ALL of which have a mix of users, as our Revit staff is exactly split down the line of "already got new hardware" and "waiting on new hardware." IRU makes a very valid point in that thread, and our experience in house on a variety of machines backs up what he says: Correlation does NOT equal Causation. I have 64 bit 12 gig machines having the same issue karen mentioned in the beginning of that thread. Memory leak is memory leak, the 64 bit machines just have more if it to tear through before they blow a gasket too.

Until you run in to Hardware LIMITATIONS, there will be no issues (meaning issues of compatibility amongst the two versions) whatsoever.
