Tying beams and columns together

When sitting beams on top of columns how do you get the end of the column to sit on top of the centre of the beam??

Wait, you said when placing beams on top of columns, but then you asked about having the end of the column on top of the beam?

If you meant the end of a beam on top of a column, you can attach the tops of columns to the bottom side of beams. But if you want the end of the beam to be centered over the column, it's best to first draw the beam past the column, attach the top of the column to the beam, then drag the beam back where you want it.

If you draw the beam to the center of the column first, it will attach the two automatically, but it will trim the beam to the face of the column instead, and will give you an error if you try to attach the column to the beam after that.
