View Full Version : AutoCAD 2009 Proxy objects not readable in 2007

Help, please! I have been unable to find info to help with this anywhere.
Using 2009 AutoCAD, saving to 2007 AutoCAD (with automatic search for Object Enablers, well, enabled). MLEADERS are coming in as rectangles/code. I'm sure other new stuff would likewise be unreadable/unacceptable.
Is there an object enabler out there for this? If so, where? A link would be great. Or is there a way to convert Mleaders back to regular leaders on existing drawings? I think most of our users don't even know what advantage an Mleader affords them, they just use it because it's what comes up as the default leader command.
Many of our clients/vendors are using 2007 and even earlier, so this is a big deal. Our deliverable is most often DWG files, so don't even start if the suggestion is to tell the recipient about the free Reader, or to send only DWF, PDF or the like (sorry to seem snippy, but been there, heard that - from our own IT person, no less).
Thanks,

I've never known Autodesk to provide any decent level of support to enable users of earlier versions of the software to effectively utilize newer entities or objects. SaveAsearlier is a poor excuse that works pretty poorly in converting recent entities (Mleader, Mtext, etc) to earlier versions. And speaking of c3d in particular, each version is only interoperable with itself.... compatability is not even a joke. Heck, opening an early c3d dwg in the latest and greatest is pretty much an exercise in futility, without stripping out all c3d objects first.
And after all, why would they care about supporting older versions? Short term revenue comes from getting users on the upgrade/subscription bandwagon, not providing excellent customer service. And executive bonuses are based on short term performance, not long term. Perhaps the AUGI board should consider pushing for customer service from the vendor as a goal they could pursue.... Collective voices may be heard louder than voices from the wilderness.
You really have only two choices here -- explode everything that's not fully supported in the earlier version, or refuse to use any objects or features that don't exist in the target version. Well, the third choice is to work in the target version of AutoCAD.....

After much searching, primarily in the wrong direction, I found a semi-suitable answer to the problem. The 2007 and earlier user needs to have Proxyshow set to 1. I'm not sure whether or not that's the default, and it still makes little or no sense to me to not be able to edit an annotation, older version or no, but there is the very simple answer to my problem. IMO, Mleader is too much "programming" for not much added benefit. But that may be just me.

For MLeaders it's possible to write a Lisp to recreate all MLeaders as normal Leaders with MText. That's actually what they are  ... maybe someone's already done such.
So I can't see why ADesk can't incorporate such into their SaveAsEarlier. The MLeader thingy was a problem in our office throughout last year, since not all the PC's were upgraded at the same time. We had some on 2005, and some on all the intervening versions up to 2009. It was a total nightmare.
The only solution was to get the same version on all, even if it meant going back to an older AC. Trying to "not use new features" is like telling your staff: "Here's a new pen we're giving you, but you're not allowed to use it." WTH?
At present all our PC's are running 2008/9, although even there we do find some problems. At least the "features" are supposed to be the same.
