View Full Version : Decal in Family?

Placed a decal on a door but decal wouldn't render. It shows up & is placed correctly on the model, but no render. I've even added the path to the render dialog, nada. I have even turned the door visibility off, again nada.

I will try to offset a reference plane as suggested by Steve Shell, but can this all be short circuited by having the decal in the door family? (BTW - door is exterior dbl, very thick carved deep profile of opposing Moose which I have drawn as model lines for elevations)

Try placing the same decal in the scene/model ( not the family ) and see if it renders.

Also, what file type is the decal? .bmp, jpg., tiff, .png etc?

I've seen the file type be an issue when rendering...........

I do have it in the model now (jpg), can see the "x" of the image, all seems to be set up properly. You think that bmp would work better?

Glenn,

Just to clarify:

I mean actually place the decal on the door live in the revit project, instead of in the family.
Then render the scene. Does the decal show up?

Yes--try saving the decal as a .bmp or tiff instaed of jpg. Any luck?

Confusion abounds, Cliff.

My initial (& current) set-up has the decal in the project and I asked the question earlier if placing the decal in the family was 1) possible and 2) an improvement over the non-rendering project method.

The project is at home so I'll have to try anything later tonite. I'll post the jpg and a screen shot, too.

How's this for a door?

So I found that you cannot add a decal to a family. Scratch one workaround. I think that I've narrowed my problem down to my walls. This is a log house, walls made with stacked sweeps on the outside as the log profiles. I have found that doors and windows don't relate to the sweeps very well and just suspect that the decal on the front door is somehow related to the sweeps.

Here's the house - shown in the png file with the front door turned off and then with the door pasted on the jpg afterwards in PS. Door and cloned grass look really fake, not very happy with the render results.

Glenn,

Sorry for any confusion--I was trying to point out that the decal should be placed "live" in the model. ( I did not have access to Revit when posting, so I was not 100% certain that the decal could not be placed in a family.)

Anyway--looks like you have it working. Rendering in Revit ( like in Max ) is all about lighting and materials. You have a good start--it can be turned into something really great
with some careful attention to sun/shadows, entourage and tweaking the materials a bit.

I suggest putting a decal on where the door is, then rendering. A decal will get shadows cast on it and can look pretty good, especially from a distance.

If the view is closer, make sure the decal's shadows match the rest of the scene.

That's exactly what I had hoped to see, Truevis. The PS attempt of mine to add the door is horrible and I won't use it.

I have submitted this as an SR, sending them my whole Lincoln Log project. I will share any enlightenment from the homies.

I believe that decals have to be placed on one face, curved or flat. Ensure that the door family has a single solid's face for the decal.

If that's correct, re-place the decal and look carefully that it's on the proper face.

Yeah, I did all that. Decal appears in every view (camera, too) but simply won't render.

I was able to render the image on the door.

1. Insert a double door.

2. I had to place two decals - one for each side of the door.

I realise this is too late for the original poster, but it might help another user.

cheers,
