View Full Version : Shadow Casting Columns

I'm setting up presentation plans for a multi-story building in which shadows are turned on. View Depth is set to Unlimited so the full shadow of a wall is cast: that is, shadows for walls on level 1 will be seen in a plan for level 2.

I'm doing this so spacial depth can be more easily read: one story spaces will have shorter shadows, atrium spaces will have longer shadows, etc.

The bugger I'm running into is columns. When I use a single column to span several floors, for some reason Revit doesn't show the shadow for the column below the current plan view. When I break the column down into level-by-level pieces, it works correctly.

Does anyone know why this is happening? Obviously I would much rather run a single column up the building.

Probably cause Revit sees the column as existing on the first floor so when the view is cut there it's cutting the column. That's a guess.

I suppose if you cheated the system and used a non-cuttable family for the column Revit might show the full extents.

I just encountered this issue. Opening the column family and look under Family Category and Parameters. You'll see an option to "Show family pre-cut in plan views". I haven't thought this through too much, but I'm not sure of the benefits of this option. Deselecting it fixed the issue of the shadow in plan.
