The symbols I use are ones I created that are annotation symbols and detail items. They are 2-D and only show in my electrical plan. My problem is I have new, existing, and demo electrical work to show and I need different line weights, line types, and halftone levels for the work to visually show the phases clearly. The only way I have been able to do this is to overide the graphics of each individual element. There must be a better way?

Build the different types into the same family, using a Yes/No type parameter to control the visibility of each. Then you can place the symbol, and change its type in the type selector to new, existing or demo.

I think I understand but it still involves editing each individual element. I guess there is no way to use phases to control them like model elements?

The whole point is they are NOT model components. Annotation (generic symbols are annotation) by intent and design are not phase aware. Otherwise all text, dimensions, tags, etc,. would be phase aware (what a nightmare just thinking of that).

Let me see if I understand this. I open the family and create a type parameter for existing, new, and demo, and I give each a yes/no parameter. What does the yes/no setting do?

The yes/no is to make the symbol visible or not. It lets you have more than one symbol in a family or more than on e variation of a symbol. If you have a light switch, you could have single and double pull in the same family.
