View Full Version : Windows Explorer Crashing

Hey all,

After working on my new machine for 8 months now, I have strange thing happening when browsing my "My Documents" folder which contain my .rfa families.
(Windows XP 64)
Also, it does not happen when running in "Safe Mode". For this reason, my I.T. person thinks it may have something to do with a Revit shell extension?

The problem is that when I select an .rfa family in my directory, I get an error message (submit support request to Microsoft) and then Windows Explorer closes. Sometimes I can highlight 2 or even 3 files before it crashes.

Anyone ever have this happen?
And, yes. I have sent a support request to Autodesk. (I haven't heard back yet.)

Thanks in advance
Steve

Seems to be happening to me now even when single-clicking on an old RVT file. It did not happen when I single-clicked on our 2009 template RTE file.

However it seems like it even happened when clicking on a folder that contained an old Revit file.

I have not sent anything to support since I'm running Win7 64-bit. I suppose I could just open the SR with Vista64

Hey there,
This thread kinda ran into another thread; however, I wanted to close this one out with my solution.
(I posted this on the duplicate thread started by Patricks)

Hey there,
Well, for what it's worth, I figured out my problem.
The Factory sent me a few e-mails, none of which helped. Sorry, but I don't think that they have a clue what is going on with this "problem".

So, giving this some thought....
My I.T. guy suspected that it had to do with a poorly written program, not working and playing well with Windows. He thought it had to do with a shell extension of some sort. And, since the problem started the day I did my Windows Update, I suspect he is correct.

I also knew that the problem did not happen when running my machine in "Safe Mode",. which disables the little preview image on the left side of the directory window under Details. (This also, told my I.T. guy that it had to do, maybe, with a shell extension in Revit files.)

So, my fix was to simply change the offending folder's view to "Thumbnail", which disables the preview image on the left side under "Details". Voila. I can now highlight, browse, preview and right click on any file now without Windows Explorer crashing.

Hope this helps someone else.

Thank you. Good Tip for this.

This is due to the thumb.db file and indexing. You can disable thumb nails and indexing if you would like. If you can't delete the file you need to end task on explorer.exe before deleting in cmd, then restart explorer.exe from task manager. There are posts on the site here to help with this process.
