View Full Version : FlexLM on a VM, and XP?

We are looking to virtualize a few things, to address issues like lousy 64 bit printer drivers forcing reboots on the server that also hosts FlexLM. Ideally I would like to have FlexLM on a dedicated VM, and not use up a very expensive Windows Server license. My thought is to just use an available XP license, but I worry about the "10 concurrent connection" limit. I am not sure if this is a general TCP/IP limit, or something that only applies to IIS. I have heard it is just HTTP, because Microsoft wanted people to buy server rather than run production websites on XP, and I have also heard it is a hard limit on all inbound connections.
So, anyone running FlexLM on XP? On a VM? How many users? I am looking at 20-30 concurrent users in a mix of Revit and ACA.

Any experience from the trenches is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

We run all 4 of our distributed network servers on VMs and haven't had much trouble. But, we used Server 2003 and just recently switched one to another VM on another server using Server 2008 because it was groaning under weak resource allocation and heavy network traffic. VMs are okay, but I don't think I would recommend XP.

You might get a better response in the CAD Management > Network forum.
