View Full Version : How to copy elements between two project files? (In-Place?)

Question for the masses:

I have a study file that I'm working on at home, detached from my Central file back at the office. Certain bits of geometry have turned out well and I'd like to copy them, preferably 'in-place', into the Central file when I return to work on Monday. But I don't know how.

I've found a vague post that states I can do something similar if I have both files open and then copy from my working file back to the Central file. Does anyone have a good method for this?

Sorry for the lame question but I wasn't able to find the same issue solved in another post. :( I'm asking now as NOT spend the first several hours at work fixing this with my PM watching...

Cheers!

You shouldn't have any trouble with copy/paste as you described. I generally open the same view in both projects and use Paste Aligned > Same Place. You will need to have both projects open in the same session of Revit for it to work, not sure why but I've never been able to copy/paste between sessions. If you have a bunch of geometry and a single plan or elevation won't show you all of what you need its fine to use a 3D view but be sure to verify that everything pasted exactly were you intended it to go.

You don't want to cut and paste back to the Central file. You should make a new Local file upon returning to the office from the Central. This assures you have the most up to date local. Then open (in the same session of Revit) the "detached" version you took home and worked on. You can then copy (Ctrl-C) elements from the detached version and paste them (Ctrl-V) into the new local copy. When you save to Central, the changes will be published to the Central file.

Its a best practice to not work in the Central File, including cutting and pasting elements.

Another way to do this is by using Groups. You could have made a Group from elements in your Local file at the office that you wanted to take home and work on. The Group could then be saved as its own RVT file. After working on the file at home that was the Group, insert the group RVT file back into the Local file at the office, updating the old group. Then Ungroup and Save to Central.

Good point Scott, it wasn't my intent for anyone to even work directly in the Central file but I can see how my post could have been interpreted that way. Thanks for clarifying.
