Help with creating a family

I want to create a family in revit that is a 2D drawing which has a drafted side elevation, front elevation, and plan view instead of being a true 3d object. I have been trying to do this for 30 minutes by using a generic model line based but it does not seem to be working.
Please let me know if you have any advice!

Line based means the family stretches with the length of the line. so you just picked the wrong family template to start with. Just create the family as the type of object it is, using symbol lines in each elevation and plan view as required.

As Sbrown said - but I suggest using masking regions instead of symbolic lines so your "2d" component hides things behind them (floor/wall tiles or whatever)
