We developed an alternate method for creating a white rendering that retains high-level material textures. We created a project with all the standard materials in our template as well as materials from our family templates. For most elements, we changed the material to a basic white paint but for others, we retained the image file and changed the color or transparency. We did not change the names or object styles, just the materials. The basic workflow is to transfer from the White Rendering project, create the rendering and then transfer the standards again from our template.

This is not perfect and if a team has created multiple custom materials, there is some tweaking involved but we get great results. This method also allows you to highlight one important design element. It is the method we use for the images in the Downloads (http://www.eua.com/consulting/da/?page_id=431) section of our consulting website.

The original phase method Phil Read demonstrated for creating renderings with no materials for schematic design is much faster and simpler. This is probably still the best option for early design but there are times when we want to show that a particular material is brick or wood or carpet or CMU yet still not distract the client with colors. We also have better luck with lighting when we retain material texture.

Just another tool for the toolbox...
