View Full Version : Cutting a wall with a Void. ( was-How to do this? It seams simple but.)...
Hello.
I'm evaluating Revit and I'm trying build an existing project done in autocad
Of course I'm deparing with lots of particular cases but for now here's a simple case I couldn't solve.
I attached the detail.
The problem is that the wall is not perpendicular to the facade and...sorry...it's dificult to explain in english but I think the image says it all.
Can a wall face be tapered like this?
I tried using "cut profile" and then create a wall thin wall (just the finish material) to simulate the wrap and "cut profile" it also.
Although I don't think "cut profile" is intended to be used in this case it worked but only in plan, the 3d isn't cut.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks

Cut profile is only intended to be 2D view specific.
To do this for 3D, create an in-place family void ( generic family ) and while in sketch mode, tell the void to cut the wall. Finish the family.
You then have a choice, if you only want the 3D appearance, you could just paint a finish on the cut face. Otherwise, I would create another inplace family for the cut finish, as per the attached image.
Thanks a lot Beegee.
It works fine and I can join geometry after.
I can only copy both at the same time but if I copy the component to another wall it doesn't work.
Is there a way to reuse this component in other walls?
Any way to have the cutted host wall as parameter or something like that?
Thanks again.

Hi Guys
I read with interest the post about cutting the bottom of the wall.
I tried BeeGee's solution using Revit 6.1.
Created a 100mm Thick Block Wall
Then in plan, created a Ref plane on the LHS of the wall.
Sketched a Void by extrusion using my Ref Plane as the workplane to run
along the entired length of the wall.
Finished the Family etc.
When I view the wall, in 3D it shows the wall (unchanged) and orange sketch lines where my void should be, running along the length of the wall but it does not cut out the void at the bottom of the wall.
I always understood that this would be the way to achieve this type of wall but never tried it, but now I find I can't do it, What am I doing wrong ?

Hi David.
It would be nice if void would cut the host where it is inserted but you have to "Cut geometry" while creating the inplace element, after you added the void but still in family editor.

Hi RSF
Ah...... Cut Geometry of course. Thanks for the tip, it works like a charm.
Another trick to write down in my Revit Book.

.
You could made a generic "fillet wall end " family, load it and use join geometry to attach it to the end of your walls.
The width and cut angle and height of the fillet could all be parametric.
