annotation tags

I'm trying to modify the out of the box room tag annotation family to make the room number box size smaller.
how do I view that box when I edit the family and if I want to add lines (another box) how do I get the "room tags" line style to show up while I'm drawing?
everytime I draw a line I get the "none of the created elements are visible in sheet

The OOTB Room Tag has the box linework visibility turned off. Turn annotation visibility on in VG (see attached).
