line based GM visibility in project plan view

if i want to add vertical batten which is not on the wall (so i cannot use wall sweep), then line based GM family will be a good choice, but the family will still show up in project plan view even if i turned off family plan view already, i knew it's because work plane is on elevation view instead of plan view, but you cannot add vertical batten using work plane of plan view, and also CANNOT change work plane from elevation view to plan view afterwards w/o changing family location and orientation.
seems using "Hide in view" or "Override graphics in view" are the only way out? did i miss something here? thanks.
