Does anyone know how or if it is possible to save revit files in aan earlier version. I need to save from revit Architecture 2008 back to Revit 9. I appreciate that there may be some data loss

Sorry--the answer is NO.
This is nothing new, Revit has never been able to down-save to earlier versions.
Whoever needs the file must use your current version.

... I appreciate that there may be some data lossThen simply export to DWG (and trace it). There will be no shortage of data loss:cry:

You could also try exporting to .ifc and importing into Revit 9.

IFC will give limited ( if any ) "intelligence" of the model.
But it may be better than starting completely over?
LOL
I'd be pushing for upgrading to 2010, esp. since 2011 is coming in about 1 month.
cheers
