I am finally realizing that you are not able to adjust the width of materials in a split wall, but I am wondering how the rest of you handle the different thickness of materials in your cross-sections and details, etc.

One way is to split the wall vertically, then draw another shorter wall next to that one and pull the split layers up above and lock to the smaller wall. With a little bit of practice, you can align and lock the walls together so they stay together and don't give you any problems.
