I'm trying to make a model for a past client of ours. In it we used doug fir timbers at the dormers so they have a pitch and I'm trying to figure out how to get a plumb cut on them?

any thoughts?

thanks

Two ways depending on whats easiest to implement.

You can add a void to the rafter family with a the plumb cut angle the sum of the rafter pitch + 90 degrees.

Alternatively, you can add an in-place void family that runs the length of the eaves to accomplish the same thing.

ok great. thanks for the help. so I went into elevation and measured the angle. It was 38.25.

anyone know how to manually input in the dynamic? autocad you used to just tab to bounce between length and angle. Can't figure out how to type in 38.25?

From that I opened the timber family and created a DF Rafter family.

Then I created two voids one for the rafter cut and one for the seat cut since its sitting on a 6x6 post.

now I'm stuck again, anyone have additional tips to get the proper cuts? Also the rafter will not go the distance to the ridge or the post?

thanks again.

I'm no expert at this but I would just draw in Reference planes where you want to cut the rafter and then use the cut tool to do that.

Does that help??

If you use the cut to reference plane method it works quite well, the only thing is that if you are reproducing this truss/rafter I would suggest grouping and be certain to include your reference planes you used to cut to in the group or the cuts will not copy around.

Great!

I think this will really work.

In what view are you working on this?

I only ask because my elevation view is just a bunch of lines and my 3d view won't let me pick reference planes?

thanks again for all the help.

cheers

Actually I figured out a way to do it with openings, by face?

Is that what you all were talking about?

I think opening by face may not copy around in your groups? I'm not certain about that one. I tend to use reference planes (in a section view or plan) to cut my members, then just add them into your group in that working view and it should work

I believe you would use a section view.
