Shadow studies

Has anyone got a work around with shadows where you can have an element that is not seen in the view still casting shadows? The current way is pretty useless at times.

My situation is that I have to project shadows onto a wall in elevation from an adjacent building. However, the only way I can see the wall is to draw a section or elevation through the site, thus putting the shadow casting building behind the view and so no longer casting a shadow. I need to m² of the shadows being cast so an isometric view won't do. Any suggestions?

I ended up going to an iso view an drawing model lines on the walls affected and then going back to the elevation so I could draw filled regions over where shadows should fall. Less than ideal really.
