Ok, so I got my answer on the last issue, here's another one.

How do you guys deal with hatches that are rotated the wrong angle? Say, like a hatch for a plywood layer on a roof assembly that wants to be rotated to a 90 degree angle instead of the slope of the roof. How can you get it to be rotated to the same slope as the roof when the layer is part of an assembly?

I don't believe you can rotate the hatch; I add a detail component over the section to make it look proper.

An extra step, but it works!

Cut material patterns in wall/roof/floor/ceiling assemblies are only 2D hatches. In details, you need to place a model hatch that can be rotated.

if model hatch, then it can be rotated / moved.

Problem is Model Patterns can't be used for a material's Cut Pattern in Walls, Floors, Ceilings, or Roofs and from the sound of it the OP wants to rotate the plywood hatch in a section view of the roof assembly. FWIW you can use Model Patterns for the Surface Pattern of a material.

On drafting patterns there is a choice for them to be "orient to view",Keep Readable, or Align with element.

But Align with Element only works on System Families. So you can get your brick section pattern to work right in angled walls or rigid insulation to align with a sloped roof, but you can't get a plywood hatch in a Detail Component to work right. At least in my experience.

Why not just make the plywood part of the roof system? Then using align with element should slope the plywood hatch correctly.
Btw, great pointer Scott, I had completely forgotten about those options.

Mostly because having a hatch pattern of 1/8" lines for the laminations and groups of little diagonals along the length is going to make the plywood a black blob in plan and building section scales. And performance can be impacted by all that hatch. But I still want to show materials, so I can't use Course Scale.
My preference is to show no hatch on materials thinner than brick, but still show the scope of the material (i.e. the correct material thickness). In a building section plywood and gyp reads as a thick line, in a wall section you see sheet materials, and in the detail you add a detail component that shows the traditional representation. Works great for gyp, where only in detail do you see the lines representing the paper facing, along with the sand hatch. But the traditional plywood hatch falls apart in Revit. As does the traditional finish plywood hatch, that is actually included OOTB as all plywood (gack!) and doesn't work in angled conditions either. I have yet to hear of a kludge that actually works very well.

Ok, all good stuff. Thanks gang, I'll poke at it a bit more.

As for our office preference, we show the hatch on the building sections, even at 1/8" scale. Also, I don't want to have to place a hatch element in the building sections, and then again in the wall sections (which are nothing more than enlarged partial building sections) and then again in the next wall section, and so on and so on. That is why I was looking for it to be in the assembly, not placed later. I'm still confused by the "orient to view/keep readable/align with element" options. Guess I'll just have to poke at that some too.

When you select your cut pattern, click the ... button next to the pulldown. Select your pattern and then click the edit button, in the middle of the window there is a pulldown with the three choices.
