large .adf file

I'm wanting to create a surface out of several, rather large, .adf files. Does anybody have any good methods or workarounds to make these files smaller and more mangabile to work with in c3d? All I need to do is create a few cross sections so I can importhem them into HEC-RAS. Any suggestions or comments would be much appreciated.

Create your surface, add a Data Clip Boundary, add the .adf files as DEM data.

how do you know where to clip the data without it in the surface? maybe i don't understand what the data clip boundary is doing...
