Does anyone have any idea of what size project requires dividing? (and does it actually help with stability?)

Also where did the icon go? I can't see it on the ribbon and the hlp file says
"Menu: Steel / Divide project command" which is obviously not there anymore.

Hi Kathy,

I am unfamiliar with the divide project button as I am fairly new to ASD.

Is there any documentation you could suggest about this?

Your help would be greatly appreciated

I was hoping someone had actually used this function, it appears that it now resides in the automatic drawing creation dialogue.

The function is supposed to improve stability by dividing the documents out to external files.

Considering how badly I was struggling (stability wise) with the last project in one file, and my current one has around double the qty of members, I will try dividing it at the risk of losing lots of hair.

I should have some info on how well it worked in a few days with any luck.

Out of curiosity Kathy what is the largest project you have done on ASD . .

ie Tonnage of steel?

The project I am working on at the moment has a file size of approx 70mb which consists of 10 tonnes of steel. This seems to be very high . . .

Do you have the same problem?

I'm crashing regularly with 10Mb files.......

The largest I have done on ASD had 106 assembly types, inluding 2 curved truss awnings, 260 shaft types and 113 plates types.

After a lot of waiting for it to spit out a tonnage....almost 17t.

I had started creating drawings before realising that I probably should have used the distributed option, and ended up saving it with sections of documents, as the model was fine to carry over, but the sheets over loaded the program.

Hi Kathy

Yeah the project divide tool does get rid of alot of file size, keeping the model seperate.

However you have to be very careful with managing files, NEVER move files after the drawings folder has been created, I've had things disappear before and so it takes carefull management.

Largest project so far to date for me was 45mb.

For those who are unaware, the divide project tool seperates the drawing files from the model and places them individually in a seperate folder. This is then referenced with some smart referencing tools to allow updates and changes to documentation.

The other advantage is multiple users can work on drawings at the same time. (only 1 person can be in the model, however use of x-ref's and multiple projects solves this issue). Would be nice to see project butterfly work with all vertical in the future and over a LAN/WAN environment.

Thanks AJ

I will be doing this sometime later today, so if you got 45Mb, my file shouldbe fine, since the model is only just over 1Mb now, and only purlins/bridging to go.

Currently running a one person drafting dept, so at this stage multiple users isn't really an issue :D

Any thoughts on getting bridging to at least give me tab-lok lengths rather than the strange system it uses?

I'm thinking eventually I will need to do custom objects/profile or something.
