I have just installed Revit 2011 & done a render of an image which was also done in Revit 2010 - just to compare.
The rendered image from 2011 does not represent the materials in the same way with regard to the stone, grass, garden fill, the metal gutters & also the glass is a lot more reflective - the REVIT materials are the same type & have the same settings, nothing has been changed & the materials are Revit materials.
This did not happen from 2009 to 2010.
Has anyone else had the same problem or am i just lucky?
I have saved the file to 2011 & can't open in 2010 - I need to work on the file.
Please help....

Have you tried opening the most recent back up file? It will most likely be the same but should be 2010 compatible. As to the materials reacting differently, I couldn't give you a good answer other than the possible thought that the materials from 2010 to 2011 has changed slightly.

Are the default presets slightly different perhaps? The chrome on the letterbox seems less reflective and the stone has an interesting difference, more natural i'd say. The glazing is a let down and the sky looks a little grainy. Are they definately the same render settings? I'm very interested to find out why they are so different!

Thanks Elmo, the backup files do open in 2010.
I've had a quick look at the render settings & they appear to be the same as in 2010.

Could the differences be caused by the new "Medium Library" ?

It's a fair point but that shouldn't affected the glazing render should it?

Hey Nick... had to do a double take... looked like one of our Buildwise jobs.

Try pushing the color intensity to 1.8 or 2.2 in 2011 and see if that takes it back to where it is expected to be.

I don't render in Revit, but the tinkering I've done seems to indicate that there is no linear workflow built in for correcting gamma. Adjusting the color intensity helps restore that gamma.

Maybe someone from the factory can comment on how this compares to Metal Ray LWF.

The render settings may be the same, and the materials could be the same name, but the entire material library has been updated for 2011. Look at a specific material in 2010, and then in 2011. There are way more options to set in 2011 materials, including procedurals. I would suspect that the glass (even though the same name) is just set by default to be more reflective in 2011. Same goes for your other materials.

ok i think i've worked it out, but how does this affect my template file - do all the render settings for materials need to be changed/tweaked to suit the new system - if so this could take a while....
