I'm a Raster Design newbie.

We have five .sid files which, all together, cover an entire county. These files are in the neighborhood of 600mb (each) and consequently put a lot of strain on a workstation.

What I would like to be able to do is crop a given area out of one of these .sid files. When I attempt this, I get a message saying that the file format is not editable. I am hesitant to 'save as' because (correct me if I'm wrong) a sid file is compressed and the resulting image file would be huge.

We do not currently have any software in-house that will edit sid files and I would like to be able to work with these files without losing too much time.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Paul go ahead a chop one up......and let us know what results are.
With a copy of sid file goes without saying. Don't be skeeert!

Your only other option is to buy the software from LizardTech (http://www.lizardtech.com/) to work with the sid format.

I tried saving one of the sid files to a tiff. I let it run locally and overnight. I got an unhandled exception and consequently acad error aborting...the .tmp file that got created was 9.34 GB.

I don't think I will try that again
