Only to put it on a Workset that is set to Not be Visible by Default in all Views.

R2010? That's too bad!
On top of using workets, I've also created a new level type, turned off the Symbol at both ends by default and either made the line WHITE or screened/dotted. The downside to a white line is that is will show through the walls (hence using a large DOT pattern)
Then all you have to do is swap level types.

A workaround is to park a small scope box off to one side and assign the level to the scope box

I have another method.
I also use levels and grids that only show up in working views.
For the presentation views I switch them off using a filter.
Because I call their family names "Temporary" (both levels and grids) the filter rule states that the family name that equals that, or starts with "Temp".
I also add that filter to the view templates used for plotting.
