the order of saving then relinquish seems odd to me. I wish there was some relinquish confirmation. Why is it set up that way? Thanks.

Can't say why the order is that way. IF the file is workset enabled, and you run the workshare Monitor, it will provide you confirmation of a save changes is completed.

My guess would be that is you Relinquish first, and then Save, you'd get in trouble if your Save crashes or doesn't complete for some reason.
Now you've changed those elements and Relinquished control of them, but your changes are not in the Central File. When you get back into Revit & try to save again, you can't because you no longer own your changes.
If you Save first & then crash, the only issue is that you'll need to get back in to Relinquish. But your changes are already Saved.
