We have been running Revit 2010 for a year and now all of a sudden it will not start. The Revit splash screen appears then it seems to just stop opening. Anyone know how to fix this? We unloaded a reloaded Revit but that did not work. It seems this has been a problem for past versions but I have not seen a solution for 2010. any ideas?
Thanks.

It could be a number of things... one of them might be hardware acceleration settings; that's a common culprit for that type of issue. Give it a try. The following link contains instructions about how to change that settings in Windows XP and Windows Vista:

If its graphics related you might want to check your Revit.ini file for these two entries.
UseGraphicsHardware=0
SuppressGraphicsHardwareWarning=1

I'm not completely convinced its graphics though since I had a similar issue in 2009 and strating with a clean .ini file didn't fix the problem, Also if you chance the Hardware Acceration through WIndows it affects your entire system graphics which would effectively be the same as throwing your graphics card in the circular file and using the on board graphics port.
If a fresh install didn't help at all it could be a licensing problem like Revit is having trouble talking to the license server or the license serve isn't playing nicely.

The hardware acceleration settings didn't work. What I don't understand is one day it was working and the next day it stopped. I don't get why changing some settings would make it work since those settings have been the same for the past year.

Had the same issue here yesterday. I performed a clean uninstall of Revit Architecture 2010 (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=13712572&linkID=9243099) and then reinstalled it. Seems to have resolved the problem.

OK....I have a lab of 25 stand-alones running Revit 2010 ...same exact machines, hardware etc.....last thursday one group of kids shut down Revit ...three minutes later another group started REVIT....(didn't even shut off machines)-Three machines would not load REVIT
Have the same problem listed in the thread....splash screen for 10-20 seconds then nothing.
Did a complete uninstall/reinstall-nothing.
I just had another one with the same problem .....that makes four.

I loaded REVIT MEP on one of the "broken" computers....loaded and runs fine.

Thoughts?
Thanks

Maybe this works as a solution too: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=15145616&linkID=9243099&CMP=OTC-RSSSUP01

Haven't tried it myself though.

The same thing happened to me I uninstalled and re-installed twice - force me to start using 2011 earlier trhan I planned. Now I need to go back and fix 2010.

Thanks for the post - Too bad AutoDesk does not inform us of the potential problem and the fix... would have saved me some grief.

AUTODESK - I really dislike it when you lies to us by omission. Just tell us the problems and the fixes if you have them... we are all big boys and can handle the truth. It will save a lot of stress if we just had the information about potential problems. Get with the program AUTODESK and give us the information!!!

I had the same problem once again on a different machine. Hagbard's second posted link worked. This was a lot easier then a complete uninstall.

We just had the same issue for Revit 2011 w/ SP1...verifying now that deleting the "communication file" works for 2011 also.

2 machines affected here within just a couple of weeks. Wish I would have known that there's an easy fix earlier . . .

We just today had an issue where RAC 2011 (no WU1) wouldn't start. Just sat there with a spinning hula-hoop of death (Windows 7 x64 ;). I asked the user to try a reboot, this being Windows after all, but prior to reboot he shut down PhotoShop CS4 which had been running. Revit instantly launched.
I am not convinced this was not a total coincidence, but from now on when Revit refuses to start I am going to start with shutting down other apps, especially Adobe apps, and see what happens.
Maybe another trouble shooting tool, maybe not.

Confirmed....was having same problem just suddenly out of the blue, Revit Architecture 2010 would load splash screen and then display error "Autodesk Revit has stopped working..."

Followed the link posted to DELETE the Communications file and then tried loading again and it popped right open, no issues. Thank you for the help.

We had the same issue this morning on one of our machines...Revit Structure 2010 would hang at the splash screen. I deleted the communications file per the Autodesk link above ant it works fine now.
I have re-linked it here:

How is this Autodesk lying to you?
They've got a link on their website that fixed it.
Did you file a Support Request?
Did you do a search on their Knowledge Base?

What would you have them do? Send an email for every bug they ever find to everyone?

WOW I wish I saw this thread earlier.

Our solution to this problem involved sort of resetting some settings on my Windows user profile which wasn't as bad as doing a complete reinstall of Revit but simply deleting one file sounds a lot easier. I will definitely note that down for future use.

Had same issue. After removing Revit and components, reinstalled... Still didn't work. I simply removed the file according to Hagbard's post and it worked!

This has become quite an interesting little bug. For some odd reason a lot of people have been complaining about this. This thread over here also has the same solution. http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=121791

I have a feeling that either the comm center for 2010 got corrupt because of windows security update or possibly something like a dot net framework update. Very strange.

Just a thought.
How many of the machines that had this issue have Revit 2011 installed as well?

I only ask because the only machine in this office that had this issue, also had a trial version of 2011 installed. All other machines are OK.

Te link worked fine to resolve the issue.
Thanks.

Not sure how many of these machines had 2011 installed. I have only had 1 machine that had this and not had 2011 installed on it.
