View Full Version : In Place Family Voids
Does anyone know why when I create and in-place family void I can't in the generic model category I can't cut an generic model family that was loaded. If that is way it's suppose to work than do you know what families can be cut by in-place family voids? I know you can cut floors and walls. Or does it only work for system families?

i think what you need is to create/apply the void to the family while it's open in the family editor.
'in-place' voids work straight away on walls/floors (etc) because they themselves are also modeled 'in-place'
someone correct me if i'm wrong

Tropitech has it right. It only works on system families. Otherwise, you have to cut them in the family editor.
This issue is I don't want to cut it for all families just one. I don't really want to create a new family because that means I have to manage 2 families instead one, but looks like that is what I am going to have to do.

i'm sure you can create an instance parameter to turn your void on or off..but don't ask me how, anyone?
this way you won't need any duplicate families.

Not really, because the "object" is already cut, so the visibility of the Void doesnt matter.
But you can use a yes/no for void visibility (as far as the user is concerned) and have it drive a length parameter that pushes the void away from the object entirely.

by "on or off" i mean the void being applied to the family or not, "on" meaning the family will be cut, "off" meaning it won't be cut. voids are supposed to be invisible either way!
can parameters be used this way?
i can see how your length parameter is a perfectly acceptable solution, but it seems a bit workaround-ish?

You cant turn a void off. Thats what im getting at. Its visibility is a moot point (even in the sense of on versus off) because whether its THERE, its either cut the geometry or it hasnt. If it has, then it has.
The dimension thing is the only way to do it.
Or, have the solid modeled in the family twice. Once cut, once not. With yes/no's. In either case, thats the only option.
