Revit does not seem to recognize the outside face of an HSS column, it goes to the inside face of the column thickness. Is there a fix for this?

Are you in Coarse Level of detail? The OOTB families are weird like that. I had to edit them in our custom library so they could dimension properly at Coarse.

If you open the family and look at the properties of the outside reference line you will notice that it is set to "not a reference" if you change it to "week" that will fix the problem.

If this is known then why haven't Autodesk fixed it?

Good question. It's been that way since I started using Revit Structure in version 3. It makes for using modeled elements in details a real pain because you can't snap to the edge of a column.

Yeah, this is an odd situation. If you set the detail level to medium, the dimension will grab the outside face. However, in a fine detail level - it goes to the inside face. This is also the case for aligning items to the HSS member. I have not edited the OOTB family (but sounds like a good idea) - I typically set the detail level to medium, dimension and align - then change it back to fine.
