The Specify Types window is a catalog list, which has an incorrect value in column # 5.
To fix it, you need to find a .txt file that has the same name as the family you are trying to load. If the family is called "Square column.rfa" there must be a "Square column.txt" in the same directory. Find that file > Open it in Excel > Make the correction > Save as .csv > Open in Notepad > Save in .txt format again. I say open it in Excel because it's a lot easier to understand the relation between columns and rows in Excel than in Notepad.
Below is an example of how a catalog file looks like when you open it in a text editor:
,Width##length##inches, Table Height##length##inches,ShelfT##length##inches,Shelf Height##length##inches,Length##length##inches,LegT##length##inches
Coffe Table,30,4,1.5,12,48,3
Japanese Tea Table,30,12,1,6,48,2
Projector Table,24,36,1,18,24,2
In the illustration provided, if there was a problem with "Projector Table" in column #5 , I would had to correct the 4E cell.

Based on the image you posted I can tell that you are trying to load a family called "I-Column" and from within that family you're trying to load a type named "I300x150x8"
Since this family file has several types, they are listed in a catalog. This catalog is a .txt file with the same name as "I-Column" but with a .txt extension. Therefore you need to find that "I-Column.txt" file. The path should be similar to this:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\RAC 2011\Metric Library\Structural\Columns\Steel\I-Column.txt
(the path might vary depending on your operating system)
Most likely In the row that corresponds to a type named "I300x150x8", in column # 5, it says "5.5," . Try removing the comma, save as .csv, close. Open the .csv file in Notepad, and save it as .txt. Then, try to load the family again from the library into the project.
(or if you find that file, please post it here)

It would probably be better if you could post the txt file. Do a search on your computer for "I-Column.txt" and upload it to the forum. We can take a look at it and see what is fubar.

Are these families that came with 2011 or from 2010? I found nothing wrong with this catalog. Try this, copy the rfa file to your desktop, then drag the rfa from your desktop to your revit window. Does it open then?

What is your OS decimal symbol settings? It may be conflicting with the type catalog delimiter ",".

Steve, I hadn't considered that but it seems that it would throw an error at column 2 instead of waiting for column 5 (column 2 contains an 8.5 entry). It's also odd that you're getting the same column 5 error when pulling the family from the desktop since it shouldn't be pulling from a catalog... unless you copied the txt file to the desktop also. If so move it from the desktop and try loading the family again.

thinhphamkts (http://forums.augi.com/member.php?u=168356), can you post the rfa file?
I did a couple tests but have not been able to reproduce it.

I am posting both the .rfa and the correspondent .txt file Thinhphamkts had sent to my email last week. He should have posted them here, too. These files load the family and show the catalog correctly in my computer, and they will probably load correctly in your computers as well. There isn't anything wrong in these files. I think Thinhphamkts has just a bad or incomplete Revit installation.
