(Revit 2010)
I may be missing something...
Assume i have a housing estate, and i want to place houses by linking them into my master site plan.
Is there a way of specifing the exact coordinate to place the linked file at. ? (ie, corner of house at x3500,y7000,z500)
And likewise, if i place an instance of the linked file down, and want to MOVE it to a specific coordinate, can i do this as well?
Thanks
Graeme

Take a look here:
http://designreform.net/2009/09/revit-2010-%e2%80%93-publishing-shared-coordinates-named-views-across-linked-files/
This may help with Shared Locations, Linked Files, etc.
I believe you can specify a point when linking in a new model into the master site.

Thanks Cliff
Does not really help me im afraid,
I understand well about Shared coordinates, linking files, multiple locations etc.
But i cannot solve what appears to be a simple request from Revit,
Which is in essence to Move a linked file, or perhaps even a family or object to a particular coordinate.
(I hate to compare, but in AutoCAD you can simply type the coordinate where you want the object/element to end up?)

In a plan, elevation, or 3D view you can use Visibility/Graphics to turn on the Project Base Point and Survey Point listed under Site. Those will have specific coordinates which you can modify if needed but they are simply base points for reference. There currently isn't a way to do like AutoCAD and start the wall command, lets say, and type in a start point 0,0,0 and then an end point. Afterall what part of the wall would it place at that point? The top exterior corner, the bottom interior corner, what about the centerline of the wall, or maybe the core? Too many possiblities. While it might be nice for a few instances, it seems like it would be an absolute nightmare in reality.

I can see the need however, to be able to place items at a certain coordinate,
If i use the Spot Coordinate tool, to place this at a corner of a wall, then highlight the wall, and the spot coordinate turns blue, and i can overtype a coordinate (much like the rest of Revit temp dims), but it just doenst do this.
Im sure this is linked to my age old problem of not being able to schedule the coordinates of piles......
ie. does revit 'actually' know where all its objects sit in space reletive to the specified coordinate system, or does it only know where they are relative to its own origin.
In the end, i could create an AutoCAD site plan, with my building extent plans placed at the correct coordinate, then link this dwg in, etc etc..
But why should i have to use autocad to do this, perhaps i havent got autocad....
arrgghh.
(i still love revit though.)

Hi Graeme,
I just had a similar problem...just wanted to place two existing piles into my model which I was given the coordinates...in the end I had to go via Autocad...link dwg etc. to place these piles.
That's quite an effort for such a simple task.
With regards to scheduling the coordinates of piles (or any other objects) have you heard of Excitech?...they have developed a tool (add-in which is free of charge) that allows you to schedule pile coordinates as well as cut-off levels etc.
Personally I've used it a few times and it works very well.

Thanks Stephan
Yes I know Excitech (dealt with them for 15 years)
I tried the pile schedule app they wrote, was ok for a one off. But i seem to remember that the coordinates didnt automatically update if you moved the piles, and you had to remember to manually run their app again to refresh?
In the end i spot coordinated all my piles on a drawing and issued that!!.
(previuos i exported out to an autocad file, replaced the revit pile blocks with autocad blocks and used dataextraction to create a spreadsheet, worked but was far to long winded.)
Im surprised Autodesk havent added this coordinate parameter to the scheduling, they managed to add the current revision of a sheet to the sheet list schedule!!.
not checked 2011 yet, i assume it doesnt have coordinates?
