Does anyone have any experience using a FTP File Transfer Site? I need to transfer Revit files to another person outside of my network and have came to the conclusion that this may be the only option since my files are to large for regular emailing. Just wondering if FTP is the way to go. Thanks.

FTP works but I have to ask how large of files are you needing to transfer? On a past project another firm was hosting the FTP site and it was ok at first but by the end of the project we had three models at 200 ish MB a piece. It got a bit cumbersome to say the least. We have a few projects right now that are similar and we are using a dedicated file transfer service. Its much quicker and more reliable the the FTP way. But as I said first FTP does work, it has its limitations though.

If you want to set up your own, take a look here. Works well and the price is right.

On dedicated projects, using NewForma Project Center, which has a built-in FTP. For small jobs / miscellaneous one-time transfers, I use YouSendIt.com, which gives you up to 2GB of transfer data, and the intro user level is free.

My files are pretty small (10 MB) it's just an 8 sheeted house drawing. I'm not very experienced with the know-how on all of this file transfer stuff, so any issues will
be troublesome. Although I will look into the site given above. Thanks for the help.

Ditto on the Newforma, but if you don't already have it, it is pretty pricey. It does way more than just file transfer.
There are several free file tranfer programs out there. Most have a limited storage amount, but 2 Gig should get you by.

DropBox works well with a dedicated team of users who are given access. YouSendIt is a one-time (or you control the accessibility window) that sends an email to the recipient with a link for ease. Very good option for entry-level FTP users or one-time transfers with folks who don't want to load a widget to their system.

Didn't realize there are so many free sites out there. We are using Newforma but I'll keep this thread in mind if somebody comes asking about saving money.

We use Filezilla, and it works great. The clients are downloaded free. Only issue is setting up a partition on one of your servers, and making it available to the internet. We have to send a user name and password to all that access the site. We actually restrict access to a specific project directory. They can "see" the names of the other project directories, but cannot access or read anything in any other directory other than that we provide access to.

As with Nancy, I too use YouSendIt as my file server.
I use it not so much for sending models, although that happens from time to time if I have a contractor doing some work for me, but more commonly for simply sending pdfs around.
As a typical full set of Town Planning drawings could be 5 - 10 mb, which a lot of mailboxes will spit out as too large. I find the email notification is ideal for my clients who can simply click on the link which is automatically generated and download the pdfs.
I use the standard paid service which costs around $60usd PA.
