The selection tree should be setup so that files can be named whatever you want them to be in the tree, regardless of what they are actually called, and can be re-assigned.

In other words, I should be able to make a list such as this

L01 Duct
L01 Mpipe
L01 Plumbing
L01 Electrical
L01 Fire Protection

I should then be able to right-click on each of these and assign the file that's associated with it. L01 Duct might point to a file named "100605 FLLT4 THERMAL - L01 DUCT". I run initial clashes, subcontractor corrects the problems, and I simply right click on the L01 Duct in the file tree and have it now point to the new file named "100608 FLLT4 THERMAL - L01 DUCT".

IMHO, the model names should never change. Putting the dates in the filename itself is poor file management.

But I do like the idea of aliasing the model names similar to aliasing an AutoCAD XRef.

All file names, regardless of what they are, start with the dates here. It's non-negotiable as the procedure outranks me.

But, it has been helpful too in NW because it's the only way to verify, once the file is in there, that it's the latest date. I can't right-click on the file tree and check, I can't save an nwd and have a way for the recipient to check, etc. You'd be amazed how many times the sub simply says "oh no, I changed that, you must not have my latest file".

to me the system should work similar to the "reload from" feature in Revit.
