Sub region on previous phase?

I have a topo that was graded in the second phase. I have been asked to show an existing path on the topo. When I draw the sub region sketch, it automatically applies to the second phase and I can't create one for the first!

How do I add the sub region to the original topo?

Make sure your view phase is set to the phase of the original topo.

That's the clincher! I added the topo sub region in a view set to the first phase. Revit spat and hissed... "Subregion does not appear to overlap a Toposurface with an appropriate Phase and Design Option."

One thing I noticed with the sub tool as opposed to split surface is that you don't select the surface you want to work on. Is Revit trying to be too clever by adding sub regions to the latest topo?
