Since loading 2011 I don't have access to shared parameters. In a family when I pick add parameter, choose shared parameter, and pick select, there are no parameters or parameter groups listed. When I pick create it creates a .txt file but it s not added to the list in this dialog. In previous versions I've always been confused about where the file is stored when I create it.

it's like parking at the mall. You can park anywhere you like but if you don't remember where that was you'll have trouble getting home :) You can put a shared parameter text file anywhere you like and Revit lists the last one used in the location line. If there aren't any listed it's because you haven't told Revit where you parked yet

where and how do you define the path

when you hit the Create button in the Edit Shared Parameters dialog it should open a Create Shared Parameter File dialog where you can browse to the location of your choice.

ok, I created a new parameter and have moved the file around to different locations, but it does not show up in the dialog list of parameters and does not show up in the add paramater in the family.

have you created any parameter groups and parameters in your file yet?

That helped. I had created a new parameter but it wouldn't show up in the parameter list, so I created a group , then the parameter button becomes active and I typed in the new parameter name there and it went in the list and now its available to add in the family. This was throwing me off because I had never had to create new parameters and groups after any of the previous releases. I must have just always used shared parameters that were already in the program. I also thought there were predefined groups and you didn't have to recreate groups for windows, doors, etc.
Thanks for your help

no problem, glad you got it figured out. If there are no groups with parameters there's nothing for Revit to see...
