How can I place a pattern on an object, like a slab for instance. I added a surface pattern in the materials dialog, but it only shows up in 3D views. Thanks.

The surface pattern should show up in all views, if it's a model pattern.
You may need to go into the view properties of the views where it's not appearing
and make sure it's not overridden or turned off.

Also check the view range.

It should show up in all views if its a Drafting Pattern too. Is the view scale so drastic that a pattern you used is turning to a solid . VG > Model > Floor > Surface Patterns, may be turned off. Or an individual element override, but i doubt it if you just did it.
