Hey guys,
I never seemed to have this problem when I was using AutoCAD 2008.
I have a 2 monitor setup, and keep my Properties Palette and Command line on my secondary monitor to maximize screen space on my primary monitor.
I like being able see all the stuff on the properties palette.
This lets me touch any object and know pretty much all there is to know about it, and do quite a number of changes from the palette.
However, with 2010, the palette seems to take forever to generate, the more stuff the palette needs to be populated with, the longer it takes (ie. lines take a bit, dimensions take a very long time, a few seconds!).
This is highly annoying and I feel quite starved for information with the palette closed.
Help!
Does anybody know why it's taking so long to read the properties of my objects?

Sorry, I cant help you with your problem, I never experienced this issue in 2010, but in 2011, it is terrible, probably worse than what you describe.

I have 2010 also. Same problem, I've heard a few people complain about it but no solutions.
Like you & others i just turn it off, then turn it on when I need it. Trust me you will get used to it. But it does suck.

I am highly amused how AutoDesk has gone and screwed things up once again.
There's a reason that they JUST implemented a floating properties palette in Revit.
It's a more efficient way to work.
I was considering upgrading to 2011 to see if it would fix this problem, but I guess not.
So sad

I wouldn't say that they actually screwed things up with the floating properties palette, rather that they failed to write the software to work efficiently with anything other than tiny data sets. In a trivial exercise, the properties palette, along with the new layer manager and the new xref manager, all work just fine. Of course, the real world is not trivial.....
Fundamentally, for these new bling features to be useful, the autodesk programmers will need to learn to embrace multi threaded programmng, and spawn off separate threads, running concurrently on distinct processors. There is little that is more annoying than to use a high end machine with dual quad core processors, and watching it labor to accomplish such simple tasks as populating a list in a palette. And then to open up TaskManager, and realize that processor 1 is running at 98 percent, while the other seven core are lazing along with nothing to do.
I would expect that c3d is in even more critical need of decent multithreading, because of the poor implementation of 'dynamic updates'.

I just switched machines and now have Windows 7 Professional (vs XP Pro) and noticed a hesitation with the Properties window open. I turned the Windows 7 Aero theme off and this seems to have helped.

I moved from v2010 to v2011 in 3 months ago.
I had no problems with the Properties Palette in v2010 and the one in v2011 just working fine.
My details:
v2010 on WinXP pro 32bit - 2GB Graphics & 4GB Ram
v2011 on Win7 pro 64 bit - 2GB Graphics & 8GB Ram.
There are number of items to be clarified.
Hardware:
Have you upgraded your machine since moving to v2010?
- It may be a hardware issue, ie. lack of ram or improper selection of graphics cards referring to the v2010 installation requirements.
Software:
It may be the software installation issues, ie. improper installation of AutoCAD, the driver of graphics card or your add-ons.
Perhaps you need to repair or reinstall your AutoCAD?
