I have a site plan with a carport on it and i want to see underneath the carport roof to see a specific site element that is hidden by it. Is there a way to cut away part of the carport roof to see underneath?
Thanks in advance,
Cameron

You can just turn the roof off.
I think you can also select the roof and make it transparent.

You can also try a plan region with a different view range for the specific area you want to see.

I want to show the roof is there, but i just want to cut away a corner of it to see below it.
For lack of a better example, or a better description here is a bad example of what i want to do :P

I want to do to my roof in plan, what that sketch did to its roof.
I could transparent it, but i sort of like the look of a cutaway for some reason.
It may not even be possible, i just thought there may be some trick with mask regions or something that i wasn't aware of.
Thanks,
Cameron

I'm thinking plan region is your best bet. I guess you could then outline it on one side to make the "jagged" cut away? IDK. never tried it.

A plan region should be enough. However, if you want to explore other effects, try this:
Go to your default {3D} view, or click on Default 3D view on the quick access toolbar.
Find the cube. Hover the cursor below the lower right corner of the cube until you see a little arrow. Click on that arrow to display a menu. From the menu select "Orient to a view" from there, select Floor plans > Site plan. Now using the cube again, switch to an isometric view. Pull the handles of the upper face down until you find the desired cut away look. Now use the cube again to switch to a top view. Use the menu fom the cube to save the view. Then, you can also rotate this bounding box and stretch other faces of it to create different results. See illustration.

One other suggestion... would be to create a face based family and only put voids in it (whatever shape you like - plan regions are limited to straight sides). Then load into your project and place it on the roof. Although this will modify your model in other views which is doubtful that you want. See example.

You could do this with design options. Make one option the "real" roof and then make a 2nd option the cut away roof. In the view you want to see it cut away have that view display the option roof instead of the "real" roof. all other views use the real roof and ignore the cut away option.

I vote for Jeff's Design Option method.

I agree. I think Jeff's solution addresses exactly what the user had in mind. DoTheBim's solution is awesome, too, for a more advanced, in-depth type of cutaway view, showing even the layers of materials in slabs, floors and roof; amazing.

Or--combine DotheBIM and Jeff's methods--line based cutaway in a Design option?!
cheers

That is what I would do if I wanted to take more time to do an example.

for better VG control, i'll vote for Jeff.
for "jagged" effect, i'll vote for DoTheBIM.
above all, i'll vote for Alfredo, as this is what section box for, and don't forget you can also rotate section box around to have "angled" cut effect.
