cutting a whole in a floor

how do you cut a whole in a floor in order to make room for stairs? i only need to go through 1 floor

1. Edit the floor boundary--in sketch mode just modify the footprint to carve out the hole.

2. Use a Shaft Opening

Another option. If you create a family component that contains a void that is face based, you'll be able to locate and schedule the openings. This is great for creating repetitive openings in your project.
