j,
I can explain it -- but, I've noticed that you throw out quite a few questions
and it appears that you are not searching on this Forum first, before asking the question.
Please search here and the Revit help 1st--then if you still need help ask.
For your trusses--go to a Floor and/or Roof framing plan, set the work plane where it needs to be, load a truss family from the Structural component folder, and place the truss.
Then copy/array as needed. For joists, take a look at using Beam Systems--you draw a rectangular "bay" and specify a joist size and spacing, and it fills them in automatically.
Then if you edit the boundary of the beam system, the joists adjust.
cheers.......

Are you trying to load families for Revit Structure? I don't think you can do that. I could be wrong, though.
