Has 2011 gotten rid of in-place massing other than just extrusions? I'd like to add a cornice with a profile on top of a balustrade (it's not a continuous wall so a wall sweep won't work) and I would normally do this with a sweep but I don't see that option in the Massing panel. Is it hiding somewhere?

Component > Create in Place, on the Home Ribbon. An in-place Wall component is now very different from a Mass.

It's not best practice to use massing for this.

A wall sweep will work, even on a non-continuous wall--you can grip edit the end of the sweep back to where it needs to stop and/or adjust sweep returns/angles.

why is a mass not a good idea for this? performance issues? just curious...

Massing is intended for "building size masses"--not for small items like a cornice on a railing, etc.

Check out some of the tutorials/help on Conceptual Massing.
