I have a family that I created using a generic family template. Is there a way I can change it to a face or wall based family? I'm trying not to have to re-create it. Thanks.

Not with a simple flick of a switch. You can nest the generic family into a face based template but other than that it's a do over :(

if you created using GM w/o any host based, why bother changing to face or wall based, to my knowledge, as long as you check "Work plane based" and uncheck "Always vertical", when you insert into project, it will act like face based if you choose "Place on Face" option.

besides, you can convert GM into faced based using API, except line based, and no host based, to be more specific, ceiling/floor/roof/wall based can be converted to face based using API.
