Hip Hip Array! or not. Controlling arrays?

Arrays are wonderful in principal but in practice they're not so great. I can use a parameter to control the radius of a radial array but I cant drive the centre mark. I thought about nesting it but I want to array a void so it needs to be in the family. I also want to lock the begining and end of the array arc. I have a bad feeling about this...

You can do it all, but it takes a few levels of nesting. Which means having the Void as a face based family, or having the solids and voids in the same family, nested. Its annoying, to be sure.
