What gets applied to a view if you assign 'By Linked View' to it? I would assume the visibility settings, but how about the view range? What else? Thanks.

A comparison shows it does not bring over the following:
Model Graphics Style
Discipline
View Purpose
Phase Filter
But these are all available in the View Templates.

Yes, but they are also available on the first page of the Custom settings for a Linked Revit File as well. That way, you can have a linked structural file always show a structural view, etc., if that is really what you want. For instance we found we need to set the detail level of our consultant's linked MEP file to Fine to get full width of pipes, ducts, etc. so show correctly in our wall sections, and floor plans.
