Hi,

I've just started looking at Revit after many years using AutoCAD. I'm currently using "Revit Architecture 2010 NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED" to teach me the basics but as with any book, it can't answer questions when things don't quite go to plan.

There are two issues that I've run into while working through this book - I don't know how many people have used it but I'm hoping the problems aren't unique to either this book or me.

Firstly, reference planes. I started my drawing and put in a few reference planes and then as the drawing developed and more levels were introduced I found that the reference planes weren't showing up on the new levels. In the book it tells me that the planes will show in all views but for some reason these don't. If I draw a brand new ref plane then this does indeed show right the way through but the old ones don't. I know I could simply redraw my old planes but that seems like a job I shouldn't have to do so my first question is "How do I get existing reference planes to populate all new levels?"

Secondly, I have created a floor with a carpet covering. I have then gone to a toliet area and and created a split face and painted it with a tiled pattern. All worked well. Later in the book I put a lift shaft into the building and as soon as the shaft is completed, the entire floor is now covered in ceramic tiles even though it is still classed as being carpeted so for some reason, the paint has 'leaked' out of the split face and filled the entire floor as a result of putting a shaft through the slab. So my second question is "Is this a common problem that painted surfaces will leak when modifying a floor slab, or is it a result of me making a mistake somewhere along the way?"

Neither of these problems is an absolute showstopper and I am able to 'fix' them using my own cobbled together methods but it's bugging me that I can't fathom out proper solutions so could someone please put me out of my misery and let me know if this is normal behaviour or if I'm doing something wrong?

1. Reference planes only go to all levels if they are placed in the plan view....and apply to levels when placed. Add a new level you need to go to a section or elevation view and modify it to stretch up to the next level at least to where the cut is at.

2. Don't use split face for floors...you found out why.
Create a tile floor type and put that in place above your floor...or if your not going to use it for 3D views, I suggest using a fill pattern. Not everything has to be in 3D ;)

Can't believe I missed that one - just one of those situations where I was looking directly at the solution but not seeing it.

2. Don't use split face for floors...you found out why.

So at least I now know that it was me doing something wrong - thanks for the tips on the workarounds.

OK, I'm back with another question...

I have a 5 storey building and have set out my gridlines in Level 1. I have the bubbles set in the correct locations, elbows apllied all nice and tidy. I go to Level 2 and the gridlines have bubbles at the wrongs ends, no elbows etc. The same applies to levels 3,4 and 5 also.

Is this another of Revit's 'quirks' or is there a way to be able to set out gridlines in one view and have the same layout appear in all views? I think gridlines are pretty much uniform throughout any building so I would have thought this to be a basic thing - it would be a pain if I'd done a 50 storey towerblock and had to manually tweak every level.

Select the grid line(s) that are on the correct position and then ( I am using MEP 2011) look for "Propogate Extents" and select the levels you want to apply. hth
