View Full Version : 2011 2011 Suddenly Slow on Certain Commands

I have had 2011 successfully installed on my machine for several months. Two weeks ago it started going laboriously slow on some commands. Other machines in our network are still normal.

The slow commands are: Undo, Plot, or zooming/panning through a locked viewport (If any objects have been selected in the locked viewport, then the speed turns back to normal!). Also slow is switching between model/paper space, or maximising a viewport.

My CPU usage peaks over 50% just when switching from paper to model space.

Something is slowing it down, and it takes over 10 seconds to pan.

Anyone got any ideas how I diagnose this? Could it be a setting in the search paths?

Do you have your Layer Control Dialog box open (floating) as a palette?
Do you by any chance have an extremely large number of layers in your file (many thousands) including those that come in through Xrefs?

It occurs on any drawing, even one with only 5-10 layers. It also occurs regardless of whether the Layer Control Dialogue box is open. I remember that dialog box used to slow things down in 2010. But this is much worse than that lag used to be. Thanks.

its comonly refered to as bloatware, autocad has just become so complex and big its now a dog to run. ive got a pretty sweet computer and 95% of my life is spent 2d draughting and it runs like a dog. Autodesk need to seriously review what they are up to because this release is the worst ever.

just try doing a complex hatch and watch your computer crash...

I have seen and fixed this issue in several previous releases. In my experience, it is caused by having a shortcut (.lnk file) within AutoCAD's support and/or printer support paths, where that shortcut refers to a folder that does not exist. This is typically caused by copying over your printer config files and taking an old shortcut with them. Things work fine while the old folder exists, but if you clean things up by uninstalling or manually removing the old folder, or if you change network paths or drive letters, that's when the trouble starts.

Are you running Windows 7? Try switching back to the "basic" theme in your display properties, this has seemed to help out our users when they all of a sudden have performance issues. I don't know if their was a windows update recently or something but we had the same thing with users having no problems for months then all of a sudden they have sluggish performance or are locking up.

Been crashing with trying to hatch - out of memory msg comes up.

BUT - I was looking around and found this thread.
In ACA 2011 this was in my paths but I could not find this

C:\Documents and Settings\dhanson\application data\autodesk\aca 2011\enu\support\pats

Anyone else???
I have to go find what I can now do to get around the out of memory msg.

I'm not familiar with that path (or ACA), but if that folder is in your search path but doesn't exist, just try creating that folder and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then you can either leave it like that or try removing it from both places and see if it breaks anything.

We recently did a server update. Don't know everything that was done but plotting, undo, options and a few other things I can't recall at the moment have been extremely slow to respond ever since. I've been switching back and forth between 2009 & 2010 because IT hasn't updated the plot drivers for 2010 yet. Maybe that's the problem, who knows. I did however stumble on this little nugget. I almost always have the properties pallete open and it's never been an issue unless your trying to select things one by one or a lot of them. I turned it off today and what do you know. Undo is now almost instantaneous. Plot, options and the other seem to be unaffected though. Hope this helps or may shed some light on the other problems
