Hi,

I would have liked to search the forums and find the result without creating a new thread but with the numerous types of crashes out there, I didn't have any luck.

Problem:
I open Revit or open a Revit file, the "Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010" preview window comes up, and then after a few seconds, it just disappears. I was working in Revit this morning, went to lunch, and when I came back, I was not able to open Revit again. RAM and memory are not an issue as I have been smoothly working in 2010 for sometime

I tried rebooting, tried shutting down, tried a complete virus scan, tried the disk clean up, cleared my cookies/history on firefox - not sure what else to try.

If anyone has any suggestions or knowledge on this problem, please let me know. This happened to me in the past with Design Review but a month or two later, it magically started working again but I'm not sure what was the solution.

Thanks!

Have IT go in to the registry and wipe out the entry for your user profile, that says REVIT in it. If you want to test it before you remove it, log in to the machine as anyone else and see if it works normally.

Thank you! What a life-saver. I logged in as another user and it works.

Could you provide more information on the registry editing part? We don't exactly have a dedicated IT person so I'm not sure if the usual person we go to with problems will know how to do this.

I tried checking the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010\Profiles folder but didn't find anything with a value set for my user name.

Thanks for the response, though. I can at least do some work in the meantime.

I am having the same problem. Revit 2010 on Windows 7 64bit crashes with a kernel.dll error. It opens for other profiles, not sure how long it will keep working. Can't correlate the Registry number for the user name. Also not quite sure which entry to delete. Probably headed for a complete wipe and reinstall, as Autocad 2010 is giving me problems as well.

I posted a link to a possible solution regarding WSCommCntr

I stumbled across a thread about the WSCOMmm....thing and was hoping that was the case because I noticed it in my Task Manager but after I finished reading the thread and checked my task manager again, it had disappeared so for me, at least, that wasn't the problem.

Our guy who we go to for IT problems copied all of the files in my username's folder under Documents and Settings to a new folder and deleted that folder and that seemed to fix the problem.

Of course it would have worked. You deleted the communications file under your documents which as the fix to the problem. :)

Elmo,

Where exactly is the communications file you mentioned? I have encountered this exact same problem under Windows XP computers only with Revit 2010 & 2011.

Here is the info pulled from Revitin plain English (http://revit.blogspot.com/).

I found another thread about Revit Crashing on Startup which can be found below.

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/Autodesk-Revit-Structure/Random-Crashes-in-Revit-2010/m-p/2582907

Is Revit crashing on startup?

If so, you may want to look at this thread:
http://discussion.autodesk.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=774015
You could try two things:
UI State.dat may be corrupt- More information on this is here:
http://revitclinic.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/04/revit-2010-ui.html
or here:
http://dorevit.blogspot.com/2010/04/revit-10-crashing-uistatedat.html
Short answer:
To reset the ribbon and Quick Access toolbar, rename or delete the UIState.dat file located in the following folders:

For Windows XP:
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit Structure 2010

For Windows Vista/ Windows 7:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit Structure 2010

Or a CommCenter file may be corrupt: From the information here:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=15145616&linkID=9243099

This can occur because of a conflict with a Communication Center file. Delete the following file, if present on the workstation at the following location:

Windows XP

Autodesk Revit Structure 2010
c:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit Structure 2010\ENU\Components\WebServices\WSCommCntrData.xml

Windows Vista \ Windows 7

Autodesk Revit Structure 2010
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit Structure 2010\ENU\Components\WebServices\WSCommCntrData.xml
