View Full Version : Export to FBX Polygons Gone Mad

Exporting a 3D view from Revit Architecture 2011 to an FBX produces a file with excessive numbers of polygons. Looking at the file in 3D Studio Max it becomes clear that Revit creates what appears to be an uncessary number of vertices on flat faces and triangluated ploygons on curved surfaces.

For example some steel structure exported from Revit creates 37 times the number of polys needed to create the same geometry directly in 3D Studio Max.

Original Revit Structure: 153,314 polys
Re-built 3D Studio Max Strucutre: 4,056 polys

Is there some way to reduce the number of ploys created in an FBX export? Perhaps a utility to weed out the excess vertices and reduce the number of polys?

Our graphics guy would greatly appreciate some solutions on this topic!

If you have not already, try installing this:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/item?siteID=123112&id=15302592&linkID=9241177&CMP=OTC-RSSSUP01

and make sure you have this installed:

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/item?siteID=123112&id=10775855

not sure if these will improve poly count, but should improve overall workflow/stability
from Revit>FBX>3dsMax Design 2011.

cheers

Alas our patches and plug-ins are up-to-date. But thanks for the suggestion.

For structural element change the level of detail in the exported view.
But for the overall model you are right. A simple curtain wall panel have 6 faces plus the mullions. Which is usually a problem for any render because of the coinciding faces.

Ditto here... I just came across this thread, but I started one earlier today because of similar issues. If you look in post 3 I have some stats from my testing. FBX brought in 5.3 times as many vertices as what LegacyDWG did, and 1/3rd more than normal DWG,
