in a 3D view using VG, i am able to turm off walls on a linked model...

VG > Revit Links > Display Settings / Custom > ... Link Display Settings dialog > uncheck Walls

this works great. when checking the Transparent option for Walls, nothing seems to happen.

with the Walls on (checked), why is the transparent setting not working?

thanks for your suggestions.

I think you'll find a better way of doing this is to set up a 3D view in the model you are linking in (if you have access to it)

This way you control the walls in that model, turn them off, and save that view and name it accordingly.
Then when you link the model in, go to VG options, and the 'revit links' tab, and then 'by host view' and choose your modified view.
I use this method for collaboration in a 2way project and it works well, but its best if you ask the architect (or whoever you get the model from) if they can set up these kind of views for you, as otherwise you need to set up the view everytime you get an update unless they create it in their main file.

Hope this solves the issue for you.

i just need to do this one thing - make the walls transparent.

can anyone tell me why transparent isn't working?

thanks for the suggestion. maybe for a complicated setup, your suggestion would be the better way, but this is a simple one-time setting. asking someone else in another office to create another view and resend the file is a little overkill.

I was trying to say that you need to set this view up in the linked in model.
I think that setting walls to transparent will only make -your- walls (ie walls in your model, not linked walls) transparent.

I've never really tried making the walls transparent in a linked model so I'm not 100% sure on that, but as with other settings I imagine it's similar.

ddenton - No - don't set it up in the linked view.

Your method is correct and it does ... and does not work. Seems there is a bug here.

If I turn on the linked structural walls with them solid, fine, when I set them to transparent - fine - however, if I then set them to solid again, they are still transparent. It seems that it does work if I set the link to host. then change it to custom but when I modify the custom, I have a problem.

Experiment with resetting it and see if it then works.

the setting being changed in my example is in the "Link Display Settings" dialog. any changes here should have no effect on the model, only the linked model. :o)
